  18. The  Playstation has had Micro Machines 3 for quite some time now, and a
  19. lot  of  people  thought  it was the be-all and end-all for the top-down
  20. racer,  but  now  Ignition from Virgin/UDS threatens to knock it off the
  21. top spot for good.

  23. It takes much the same views as MM3 but uses cars in the real world, you
  24. have  a  choice  of vehicles that is both wide and bizarre:  Banana is a
  25. bright  yellow  Porsche;  Evac is a Red Cross Jeep; Enforcer is a Police
  26. car;  Redneck  is  a  hotrod and Smoke is a Mack Truck.  You also get to
  27. play with a Mini Cooper, an VW Beetle and a School bus.

  29. In  true  arcade  style,  all vehicles have a turbo, which takes time to
  30. charge up, depending on the characteristics of the one you select.  Some
  31. cars are lighter than others and so can clear jumps without resorting to
  32. the  turbo,  others  are  very  heavy and can skid round corners without
  33. bothering  to  slow  down  as  much,  the truck can even withstand being
  34. flattened by a rolling boulder - Indiana Jones style!

  36. This  game  reeks  quality,  from the excellent rendered intro - more or
  37. less a standard on games today - to the construction of the levels, with
  38. their  bridges,  snow,  hills,  tunnels, lava, snow, rain, lightning and
  39. sandstorms  all adding to the playability.  Being struck by lightning in
  40. a VW might not sound like fun, but it's hilarious!

  42. There  are  at  least  7 tracks available to start with, although one is
  43. only  accessible if you finish first in a tournament.  This is the level
  44. that  includes the train which you have to beat to the crossing, or face
  45. being smashed to bits as it hits you side on.  This isn't the only level
  46. with  NPC's  though:   there are other vehicles scattered throughout the
  47. levels  whose  basic  job  is  to get in your way as they go about their
  48. business.    Trucks,  trains  and  hovercraft  all  make  an  appearance
  49. somewhere.

  51. The  sound is something else too.  When you hit turbo for example, every
  52. vehicle  has  it's own characteristic sound:  The schoolbus is a load of
  53. kids screaming; the Truck is a blast on the Air-horn; and the Police car
  54. lights up and sounds the siren as it bounds forward.  Turbo's don't last
  55. very  long, but as there are very few straight patches in the tracks, it
  56. doesn't really matter anyway.

  58. Basically, Ignition looks like being a massive hit because it's been put
  59. together  so  well,  even if the game style isn't entirely original.  If
  60. you only buy one game this year, this one will give you loads of fun.

  64.     Playability :  9/10 - Options for it all, and easy to control.
